Flat Panel Lighting

Ever since the massive commercial success of energy saving compact fluorescent light bulbs in the 1990s and early 2000s, manufacturers have been racing to develop ever more efficient and long-lasting light bulbs.

The future of lighting may not even be light-bulb shaped, if a new technology known as the Organic Light Emitting Diode(OLED) has anything to do with it. It is type of flexible, paper-thin panel, that emits light when a charge is applied across it. OLED panels light up evenly with a wide spectrum of white light that is comparable to daylight in its essential character. As they are so slim and flexible, they can by applied to any object, be it a table, a car, or a jacket.

As these panels hardly give off any heat, they are easily the most efficient light source that is currently available, and they last far longer than any other type of lighting for that same reason.

The fact that the light they produce is so much like daylight means that they could be used to provide windowless rooms with a virtual window that offers many of the life quality benefits of a real window.

Aside from their incredible versatility, and potential for novel lighting set ups, but the main selling point of these lights is that they are by far the most environmentally sound light source currently available, being made entirely out of recyclable and sustainable materials, and use much less energy per candle of light power than any other type of light on the market.

Although current models are efficient indeed, the research team behind the technology believe that they will eventually be able to make them a hundred percent efficient, with no energy at all being dissipated through heat.

Philips, who also led the way with CFL lighting in the 1990s are the first company to market these lights, under the brand name of LumiBlade. Although these are expensive just now, it is expected that they will become extremely cheap in future, once they become a mass market device.
